Congress given fresh I-T notices of over Rs 1,800 Cr, BJP indulging in tax terrorism: Maken

Congress given fresh I-T notices of over Rs 1,800 Cr, BJP indulging in tax terrorism : Ajay Maken

 |  | New Delhi

The Congress on Friday said it has received fresh notices from the income-tax department, asking it to pay Rs 1,823.08 crore, and alleged that the BJP is in "serious violation" of income-tax laws for which authorities should raise a demand of more than Rs 4,600 crore from the saffron party.

The Congress also accused the ruling BJP of indulging in "tax terrorism" to financially cripple the opposition party ahead of the Lok Sabha polls.

Addressing a press conference at the AICC headquarters here along with Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh, party treasurer Ajay Maken alleged that the BJP is in serious violation of income-tax laws and said the I-T department should raise a demand of Rs 4,617.58 crore from the saffron party for such violations.

Maken said political parties have to fill up a proforma of Form 24A, in which two basic and important pieces of information have to be furnished -- the names and addresses of their donors.

"We have analysed all the submissions of the BJP to the Election Commission (EC). The party has faltered every year," Maken claimed.

Ramesh alleged that through the "electoral bonds scam", the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has collected Rs 8,200 crore and used the route of "pre-paid, post-paid, post-raid bribes and shell companies".

On the other hand, the BJP is engaged in "tax terrorism", he alleged.

"Efforts are being made to financially cripple the Congress, but we are not going to be cowed down," Ramesh said.

He asserted that the Congress's campaign for the upcoming parliamentary polls will continue and the party will take its guarantees to the people of the country.

"We will not be scared of these notices. We will be more aggressive and fight these polls," the former Union minister said.

Maken alleged that the Congress and other like-minded opposition parties are being selectively targeted by the I-T department, which he described as the BJP's "frontal organisation".

He said the Supreme Court will soon hear the Congress's plea on the I-T department's demands from it.

"An illegal attempt to freeze the bank accounts of the principal opposition party in February has gone on for more than a month on the eve of the general election," Maken said.

Before the dust could settle on that unprecedented "vindictive" action, in a patently "illegal and undemocratic" move, the "frontal organisation of the BJP" has launched its next "premeditated" and "diabolical" campaign against the Congress, he added.

The income-tax returns filed by the Congress for eight years have been reopened on "baseless and manufactured" grounds to levy illegal I-T demand orders totalling thousands of crores of rupees, Maken said.

The timing of the I-T department's action -- in February and March, days before and even days after the Lok Sabha polls were announced on March 16 -- speaks for itself about the mala-fide nature of these actions, the Congress leader said.

Maken alleged that the "BJP-ruled I-T department" has so far forcibly taken out Rs 135 crore from the Congress's bank accounts due to an alleged Rs 14 lakh non-compliance demand against the party.

"This amount was recovered by freezing more than Rs 270 crore of the Congress's bank balance across several accounts," he said.

During this period of several weeks, the bank accounts of the Congress were effectively "frozen" in an illegal attempt to paralyse the party's functioning during the Rahul Gandhi-led Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra, Maken alleged.

"This action was designed to choke the Congress financially and prevent, stop, delay and disable any election-related expenditure by the party on advertisements, travel, salaries, agencies etc.

"It is indeed appalling that the financial years assessed go back to 1993-94, when the late Sitaram Kesri was the party's treasurer. Out of the eight years, the I-T demand orders for four years have been issued by the BJP's frontal organisation even without assessment orders. This is unprecedented in the history of taxation in India," he said.

"These orders are based on manufactured and planted diaries and so-called raids by the BJP's frontal organisation on third parties. Several of these raided third parties enjoy stay orders from courts based on vitiated search procedures by the I-T department," Maken claimed, adding that the same interim relief is not being granted to the Congress.

In the history of India, why is the Congress, a tax-exempt political party like others, being "forced" to pay income tax during the 2024 Lok Sabha election, he asked.

Delhi liquor scam: Accused paid money to BJP to secure his bail, Kejriwal tells court

Delhi liquor scam: Accused paid money to BJP to secure his bail, Kejriwal tells court

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who was produced before the Rouse Avenue Court by the Enforcement Directorate, on Thursday alleged that his arrest is a conspiracy to “crush” the Aam Aadmi Party.

In the argument submitted before the court during the hearing on ED’s plea seeking extention of his remand custody, Kejriwal said he was arrested based on statements from four people.

“I was arrested… but no court has proved me guilty. The CBI has filed 31,000 pages (of charge sheets) and ED filed 25,000 pages. Even if you read them together… the question remains… why have I been arrested? My name came to light only in four statements of four people. Are the four statements made by different people sufficient to arrest a sitting chief minister?” Kejriwal asked.

“ED has two motives – to create a smokescreen to crush AAP and two, to create an extortion racket. Raghav Reddy contributed Rs 55 crore to BJP. He bought his bail. Money trail is clearly established,” submitted the Delhi CM before the Rouse Avenue Court.

The central probe agency objected to Kejriwal raising the issue of electoral bonds and sought a seven-day extension of his remand custody.

In its response, Additional Solicitor General S V Raju appearing for the ED told the court that Kejriwal’s statements have been recorded, and he gave evasive replies.

“He is deliberately not cooperating with us,” said ASG Raju.

The ED told the court that during his remand custody, Kejriwal did not disclose the passwords.

“Arvind Kejriwal has not disclosed the passwords. So we do not have access to digital data. He says he will speak to his lawyers and then decide whether the passwords are to be given or not. If he does not, we will have to break open the passwords,” the ASG submitted the court.

American Dream of several Indian-descent families ends inexplicably in pools of blood

American Dream of several Indian-descent families ends inexplicably in pools of blood

IANS | New Delhi |

Anand Sujith Henry, 37, his wife Alice Priyanka Benziger, 38, and their 4-year-old twin children Noah and Neithan were found dead at their home in San Mateo, California on February 13.

The police called it a case of murder-suicide in which Henry killed his wife, their children, and himself.

“We do not yet have an answer towards the motive to share,” said Jeanine Luna, Community Relations Officer, San Mateo Police Department, on Monday, almost a month after the discovery of the bodies.

Henry and Benziger came to the US from Kerala for higher studies and stayed on. They were both IT professionals. Henry worked for Google and then Meta before founding his own AI company and she worked for Zillow. Both died of gunshots and the children had either been smothered or poisoned because there were no signs of trauma on their bodies.

A month ago, another Indian-descent family was found dead at their home in Dover, Massachusetts. The police said Rakesh Kamal, 57, had shot his wife Teena Kamal, 54, and their daughter Arianna Kamal, 18, before turning the gun on himself.

The motive appeared to be financial troubles.

Kamal was under a mountain of debt and had been served an eviction notice from their multi-million dollar home.

He had been living it up without the means to support his expensive taste for luxury cars and bespoke suits.

But there are no leads to the motives or reasons for the two Indian-descent families that were found dead at their home in Dublin, Ohio in February 2023.

Rajan Rajaram, 54, had shot himself after killing his wife Santhalatha Rajan, 51, and their son Anish Rajan Rajaram, 19.

Rajaram worked as an engineer for Technosoft Corporation, based in Cincinnati. “This case has been closed and ruled a murder-suicide. The Dublin Police Department does not have any information on a motive per that investigation,” said Rebecca Myers, Public Information Officer for the city of Dublin, Ohio.

Why did Rajaram, who had lived in that house since 1998, take this extreme step?

These sort of things are happening every now and then resulting in the death of many families of Indian origins.

Their American dream ended in a pool of their own blood, at their own hand, and at their homes. But the world will never know what drove these Indian-origin families in the US to this extreme step because the police have either closed their investigation or will, as has been the trend.

Excise 'scam': HC seeks ED's stand on Arvind Kejriwal's plea against summons

Excise 'scam': HC seeks ED's stand on Arvind Kejriwal's plea against summons

 |  | New Delhi

The Delhi High Court on Wednesday sought the stand of the Enforcement Directorate on a petition by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal challenging the summons issued to him in an excise policy-linked money laundering case.

The investigating agency claimed the petition of the AAP national convenor, which also challenges certain provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, was not maintainable.

A bench headed by Justice Suresh Kumar Kait granted two weeks' time to the ED to file its reply on this aspect.

Kejriwal has moved the court in the wake of the latest summons, the ninth issued by the ED asking him to appear before it on March 21 for questioning under the provisions of PMLA.

Senior advocate AM Singhvi, appearing for Kejriwal, said the petition raises several issues, including whether a political party is covered by the anti-money laundering law.

The court also asked the AAP leader why he was not appearing pursuant to the summons to him.

The senior lawyer for the petitioner said protection from coercive action is required in the matter because of the agency's "clear intent" to apprehend him when elections are around the corner.

Kejriwal has repeatedly refused to appear in response to these summonses, calling them illegal.

The case pertains to alleged corruption in formulating and executing the city government's excise policy for 2021-22, which was later scrapped. Following a recommendation by Lt Governor V K Saxena, the CBI registered an FIR over alleged corruption which subsequently resulted in the money laundering probe.

The agencies have claimed that irregularities were committed while modifying the excise policy and undue favours were extended to licence holders. AAP leaders Manish Sisodia and Sanjay Singh are in judicial custody in the case.

Kejriwal's name has been mentioned multiple times in the charge sheets filed by the ED in the excise policy case. The agency has alleged that the accused were in touch with Kejriwal for formulating the excise policy that resulted in undue benefits for them in return for which they paid kickbacks to the Aam Aadmi Party.

A Delhi court had on Saturday granted bail to Kejriwal on two complaints filed by the ED against him for skipping six of the previous eight summonses in the money laundering case.

Tamilisai Soundararajan rejoins BJP after quitting as Governor

Tamilisai Soundararajan rejoins BJP after quitting as Governor

 |  | Chennai

Former Telangana Governor, Tamilisai Soundararjan on Wednesday rejoined the BJP in the presence of Tamil Nadu BJP President K Annamalai.

Annamalai, referring to "criticism against Tamilisai Soundararajan by Left parties and the DMK" for joining the BJP after holding the office of Governor, said persons holding exalted posts quitting office to start working again for the public as an ordinary person is possible only in the BJP.

A person belonging to a political party other than the BJP will not quit high offices. For them, being in politics is meant only to assume top positions. She functioned very well as Governor. Quitting that position and joining politics again shows Soundararajan's love for the people.

Her joining the BJP again shows her commitment to the party; her determination that her work should also contribute to strengthening the hands of Prime Minister Narendra Modi when he assumes office for a third time in a row.

Soundararajan resigned from the BJP before assuming the office of Governor of Telangana in 2019. She was appointed Lt Governor of Puducherry in 2021.

Sixty-two year old Tamilisai Soundararjan is a gynaecologist and she joined the BJP over two decades ago.

Bank Employees Likely To Have 5-Day Work Week, Salary Hike By June 2024: Reports

Bank Employees Likely To Have 5-Day Work Week, Salary Hike By June 2024: Reports

The long-standing demand of bank employees to have 5-day workweek is likely to be accepted by the government this year. According to media reports, the bank employees are likely to get 5 working days in a week, subject to the finance ministry approval, and a salary hike in June 2024.

According to an ET report, the United Forum of Bank Unions, a coalition of bank employee unions, has written a letter to Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman to allow a 5-day workweek for the banking sector.

The bank employee union also assured that there will be no reduction in banking hours for customers or in the total working hours for employees and officers.

The ET report said the union has urged the finance minister to review the matter favourably and direct the Indian Banks’ Association (IBA) accordingly.

Currently, bank branches are closed on second and fourth Saturdays. Banks unions have been demanding since 2015 offs on all Saturdays and Sundays. Under the 10th Bipartite Settlement signed in 2015, RBI and the government agreed with the IBA and declared second and fourth Saturdays as holidays.

On salary, the IBA and bank employee unions last year reached an agreement for a 17 per cent salary hike across all public sector banks (PSBs) in India, amounting to Rs 12,449 crore.

PM hits out at TMC over Sandeshkhali incident

 |  | Arambagh (WB)

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday launched a scathing attack on the TMC government in West Bengal over atrocities on women in Sandeshkhali, and said the entire country is reeling with anger over the issue..

Modi also slammed the opposition bloc INDIA for maintaining a stoic silence on the issue of Sandeshkhali horrors..

“Amid achievements, the entire country is watching the situation of Bengal today. The whole country is sad and angry after seeing what TMC, which beats the drum of Maa, Mati, and Manush, has done to the sisters of Sandeshkhali..

"What TMC has done to the sisters of Sandeshkhali is a matter of shame,” he said at a rally at Arambagh in Hooghly district.

Accusing the TMC government of being corrupt in all spheres, PM Modi said, “For INDI alliance leaders, supporting the corrupt and appeasement politics is of prime importance rather than stand by those tortured by the TMC in Sandeshkhali..

He said that the TMC is confident that it has got the support of the minorities, but the Muslims women too will vote against the goonda raj of the TMC. he said.

The Sandeshkhali region, located on the fringes of the Sunderbans, has been engulfed in turmoil for over a month due to accusations against TMC leader Shajahan Sheikh and his cohorts of sexual abuse and land usurpation..

Sheikh was arrested by the police yesterday after being on the run for 55 days.
